A whale died after lying on the sand for several days in Australia. A sperm whale stranded on a sandbar near Perth is causing serious concern. In this vulnerable state, curious swimmers touched the whale with their bare hands, and small boats collided with the mammal.

The whale stopped breathing on Dec. 12, authorities said. To learn more about the whale’s health, the body is removed from the water for examination.
