A fluffy baby brings us tremendous emotional benefits, especially for the elderly. They will be our friends. But older people sometimes worry about what will happen to their pets if something happens to them. A 60-year-old man was worried when he began to get sick.

John Burleigh, a native of Rome, New York, had an old dog named Boomer. The dog meant everything to him. Just before Thanksgiving, John fell ill and had to be hospitalized. He had to send the dog to the Roman Society for the Protection of Animals.

It is such a heartbreaking thing to do for John. He knew that he might not see Boomer gain. Thankfully, one of his former nurses stepped in to help.

Jennifer Smith, 41, worked with Burley during his time at the Adult Day Healthcare program at The Grand Rehabilitation and Nursing at Rome. When she learned about what will happen to Boomer, she couldn’t stand the thought of what might happen to the older dog.

So she went to adopt him!

In an interview with Newsweek, Kimberly Hare with The Grand Rehabilitation and Nursing Home shared, “Jennifer was calling the hospital to speak with John to get updates on his condition and to support him through this tough time. John mentioned to her that he was devastated about losing his best friend, Boomer.

It broke her heart to think that Boomer would be adopted by strangers and she couldn’t bear to think about what would happen if no one wanted to adopt this sweet 13-year-old dog. ”

She added, “She went right to the Rome Humane Society that day and paid the adoption fee, took him to the vet, and went on a shopping spree for food, crate, toys, and doggy clothes. He is very spoiled.”

John was very grateful for what Jennifer did. She was overjoyed to learn that a nurse had come to Boomer. He also called her every day to tell her about Boomer or the dog now part of her life.

When it came time for John to recover, he decided to return to the Grand. Before that Jennifer had a very special date scheduled for him and Boomer!

Kimberly Hare said, “The day I left the hospital, Jennifer Boomert wore the prettiest Christmas shirt for work at work. John didn’t know anything. As soon as John was in his room, Jennifer and Boomer went to his hospital, but I told him not to see me. I asked John if he expected a surprise visit and he said yes.

She further shared, “When he saw Jennifer and Boomer come around the corner, he just burst into tears and reached for his pal. There was not a dry eye in the room between residents and staff. He was so happy to see the dog and so thankful to Jennifer for saving him.”

Since then, Boomer has become a regular visitor at The Grand. He does not only visit John but the other residents there as well. In fact, he became some kind of a mascot there.

Kimberly said, “Boomer loves Jennifer and follows her everywhere! John is loving the visits. We are so incredibly proud of Jennifer’s dedication and selflessness. She provides the best care for our registrants and this is just one example of her outstanding commitment.”

Thanks to Jennifer, John Boomer will never be remembered or disturbed again. he knows that his beloved dog is in good hands.
