A South Carolina woman says her ex-boyfriend bit off her lip when she tried to break up with him. “He wanted to make me ugly so no one would love me,” said 19-year-old Kayla Hayes. She was just 17 when she dated Seth Fleury, who she says was controlling. After 11 months of dating, Kayla says she tried to break up with him, and that’s when he leaned in for an uninvited kiss and bit off her lower lip. She has since undergone surgery to rebuild the lip. Fleury is serving 12 years in prison.

The poor girl remembers every last cruel detail. She had gone to Seth’s house so that he could right all his wrongs, and apologize for all he had done. Kayla had already broken off the relationship a few weeks earlier, but her ex thought she was there to get back together with him. After realizing that she didn’t want to have anything to do with him, Seth did something that is beyond comprehension!

Most of us have our own version of a sob story, where we tend to feel sorry for ourselves and bemoan our self-perceived pitiful existence. But, Kayla Holmes’ nightmarish experience with an abusive ex-boyfriend serves to remind us that we actually have a ton of things to be grateful for.

The teen was raised by a single mom who put her daughter before other men, so Kayla didn’t grow up knowing what a healthy partnership was supposed to be like. When she entered into a toxic relationship with a slightly older guy, she was naive and believed him when he said that he would change. Sadly, the then 17-year-old stuck around, and soon found herself sporting black eyes, a busted nose, and eventually – a missing body part!
