The world’s oldest dog recently died in Portugal, which also officially holds the world record for the oldest dog.

Bobby, 31, died on Saturday in the Portuguese village of Conqueiros, where he lived all his life with the Costa family.

The sad news was shared online by his veterinarian, Karen Becker, who noted that his 11,478 days on earth will never be enough for those who love him.

Bobi left for the rainbow at the record age of 31 years and 165 days. According to an informative calculation in our years, Bobi would have lived as much as 217 years as a human being. His age was also confirmed in the official registry of the Portuguese Federation of Veterinarians.

Bobby was very lucky after birth – he had three more puppies, bBobby was accidentally forgotten – he was hiding in a pile of firewood, and the children who later found him saved his life. A boy named Leonel was eight years old and was secretly caring for Bobby along with his brothers. By the time the boys’ parents discovered the dog, Bobby became part of the family.

His owner Leonel says it was probably the tranquil environment that contributed to Bobby’s longevity – he was never chained and moved freely around the yard. The Bobi is a purebred Rafeiro do Alentejo dog that is considered a herding dog and the average lifespan of the aforementioned breed is 12-14 years.
