Heaters are a common portable heater, but the Umatilla County Fire Department in Oregon wants to warn everyone not to plug their heaters into the electrical wiring.
“These devices are not designed to operate with the high current required by the heater and may overheat or even ignite due to the additional flow of energy,” the agency wrote on its Facebook page.
In support of their message, they shared a gruesome photo of molten plastic from a burnt electrical wire or overheated heater.

The National Fire Protection Association warns that 32 percent of residential fires are caused by heaters, of which 79 percent are caused by heating fires.
Other fire prevention tips for heaters include:
– keep the heater at least three feet away from flammable objects (furniture, clothing, bedding, mattresses, etc.).
– keep heaters at least three feet away from things that can burn (including furniture, clothing, bedding, mattress)
– keep space heaters clean and maintain them according to manufacturer’s instructions
– never leave it unattended, especially in homes with children and pets– turn it off if you go to sleep or leave the room
– get one with an automatic shut off so if they are knocked over the turn off
– place it on a solid, flat surface
– regularly check the cords and plugs to see if they’re frayed, damaged, or worn out
– and as the fire department reminded everyone – plug it directly into outlets.
